Gondolas

Open for Growth.

A gondola is essentially a flatcar with sides, making it perfect for carrying loose, bulk items that do not need protection from the elements, such as scrap metal, aggregates, or primary steel products.  TTX Company’s fleet consists of two car types, a 50’ 6’’, 100-ton car with 3-ft sides (263,000 gross rail load), and a 66-ft, 110-ton gondola with 5’ 6’’ sides (286,000 gross rail load).  The 50’ 6’’ dates to the early 1980’s, when TTX and its owners created a free running gondola pool to offset a shortage that plagued the industry.  The larger car represents the next generation, and its higher capacity and longer length make it more efficient.
